In the heart of Kenema, on Hangha Road, sits a small shop that has become a community institution. Mama K's General Store started as a tiny storefront selling basic provisions. Today, it's the go-to spot for everything from fresh produce to household goods. Here's their story.

The Beginning

Mama K (her real name is Kadiatu Koroma) opened her shop in 2019 with modest savings and big dreams. "I started with just a few shelves—some rice, oil, tomatoes, and soap," she recalls. "Every morning, I'd pray and open my doors, hoping customers would come."

They did come, but slowly. For the first year, Mama K struggled to attract enough customers to make a profit. She knew she had good products and fair prices, but people in other parts of Kenema didn't know she existed.

Discovering LinkSalone

In early 2023, a young customer mentioned LinkSalone to Mama K. "My daughter helped me set up the account. I was nervous—I didn't know anything about computers. But she showed me how easy it was to add my products and information."

Within weeks of joining LinkSalone, things began to change. "People started coming from neighborhoods I'd never heard of. They'd say, 'I saw your shop on LinkSalone and wanted to check it out.'"

The Turning Point

The real breakthrough came when customers began leaving reviews. "One woman wrote such a nice review about our fresh vegetables. Then more people came, and more reviews followed. Soon, we had dozens of 5-star reviews."

Mama K made sure to respond to every review, thanking customers for their kind words and addressing any concerns. This engagement built even more trust with the community.

Doubling the Business

Within six months of joining LinkSalone, Mama K's customer base had doubled. She expanded her inventory, hired two assistants, and even started offering delivery for elderly customers who couldn't visit the shop.

"Before LinkSalone, I was just surviving. Now I'm thriving. I've been able to send my youngest daughter to school, and we're planning to open a second location next year."

Advice for Other Small Business Owners

Mama K's advice is simple: "Get on LinkSalone. It's free, it's easy, and it works. But don't just create a profile and forget about it. Keep your information updated, add new photos, and respond to your customers. They want to know you care."

She also emphasizes the importance of good customer service. "LinkSalone brings them in, but your service brings them back. Be kind, be fair, and treat every customer like family."

The Future

Today, Mama K's General Store is a Kenema institution. On any given day, you'll find a steady stream of customers, many of whom became regulars after discovering the shop on LinkSalone.

"I thank God every day for this business and for the people who support us. And I thank LinkSalone for helping people find us. We're proof that small shops can thrive when the community comes together."
